The chicken coop plan we used was designed to be constructed modularly, so we built almost all of the big pieces with Grandad one Saturday, and then spent every night for a little over a week working on finishing up the rest of the pieces, putting them all together, and painting it. Above is our progress as of May 29. Below is progress as of May 31.
It was a big moment for us to have the thing all together on June 2. We used paving stones for a foundation, and we put hardware cloth underneath to keep predators from tunneling in. All of the walls in the run are also covered in hardware cloth.
The chickens have a ramp to get from the henhouse into the run when the door is open.
We made a pop door (that's the door for the chickens) that we can open and close using a rope from outside the coop. We mostly leave it open, so that they can let themselves out in the morning.
We finished the painting late on June 2nd, and moved the chickens in for bedtime. The next morning we had to help them get down into the run, because they were rather hesitant, but by the third day they were going up to bed by themselves and coming down for breakfast before we made it outside.
They were clearly happy to be out of the garage, and they have since been fairly content. Hazel will sit and chat with them and feed them meal worms, and they like her better than anyone else.
